JAZZ POSTER UPDATE

Ok, so I went back to the drawing board, as my ideas were not strong enough. I felt like there was not enough beef in the sandwich. I also think I was trying too much to incorporate the 3 artists instead of focusing on Trio Da Paz, which is the group the press release highlighted as the main event.

I went back and did more and more research. (Reading through the reviews again, seeing if there could be potential in another quote; listening to their music a lot more, feeling the vibe; researching Rio De Janeiro (their hometown) and stumbling upon the Sugarloaf Mountain Cable Car ride. The press release stated, "collectively they will take us on a JOURNEY celebrating the sublime and infectious spirit of Brazilian music". From this press release quote, I picked up the term journey which is an act of traveling from one place to another, then on to terms like expedition, tour, travel. Then that lead me to transportation; basically what one would use to do the act of journey or travel.

The Sugarloaf Mountain Cable car rides from 2 mountains through 3 stops and a total of 4 cars running from one to another. So, below I illustrated with coffee and watercolor the cable car in motion leaving from one of the mountains.
After thinking a little more, I decided to transform the shape of the cable car into a music note, as the cable lines to me resembled the lines on a music sheet. I think the illustration is a visual metaphor for the music notes/brazilian music, but also synecdoche whereas it is representing the whole city of Rio De Janeiro.

I went to find more inspiration. I noticed that the diamond shape repeated in one of the fashion shows. With help from Micah, I went to research and discovered these vintage travel posters. Once again, I was back to the organic feel that I had originally liked, and also the warm tones. Also, there are some images from the Sugarloaf cable car. (Interesting fact: they are considered the safest cable car ride because they have not had any deaths/serious injuries from any of the millions of casualties that have experienced it. The background is a diagonal form pattern which is reinforcing the diagonal located on the Brazil Flag. I might have to elongate the form a little more; therefore it won't be completely square.

TOL....TYPE OUT LOUD!

An update on my type poster for Serifa.

Below was where I started with my analphabetics.

Tried a different idea of displaying them
Then moved to this idea using the actual analphabetic as a directional device. The definition is first (left) mainly because it's going on the right facing page, and aesthetically the name looks better on the right, although I did start with it reading title/definition from left to right.

Do you remember those stencils from way back when?...or even now with letter/type/shapes in these thin like plastic forms?
This is actually the background for my mailer

9.11 NEWSPAPER ADS

I was looking through yesterdays (September 11, 2009) New York Times and came across this series of advertisments. They were all the same size, and they outlined the first main spread of the newspaper. I thought it was pretty cool that all of these companies put in a little ad dedicated to September 11.

Your Business Card is CRAP!

TYPE3: UPDATE

An update on type! The more I work with Serifa, the more I'M LOVING IT! I really like the range of uses Serifa has from thin to thick typefaces. Shown below are a couple ideas of ways to get the information across in a visual pleasing manner.

I thought I would try to incoporate another color-green.

I didn't really like the green, so I think I'm sticking with the blue.
I saw potential in the letter form of the "i", so thought I would try a couple pushes with it.
I like this one. It resembles some sort of pole/light pole/flag pole.

NA: 40 FRAMES!

Pictured here are the two sequences for my activity of bowling. They are inked in pen with a coffee wash over the top of each frame, and a nice deep red watercolor which was also mixed with the coffee.

SEQUENCE 1

SEQUENCE 2In sequence 2 I wanted to help guide the eye through the action of bowling so I haloed the bowling ball and left the flying pins white. If the pins had already landed or dead, I applied the coffee wash to them. (Just highlighting the actions)

NEW APPROACH...

Ok, so I rethought the Serifa Park, and with the help of Mike Kidwell, the type is driving this home.Below is my plan for the inside of the mailer. The intention is for the people who are interested in this typeface will buy it and hang this poster up. I wanted something simple where eye catchers would have to look at the poster close up to make out the subtle descriptive words.

I thought this was very interesting! Definitely a unique media to work with!

JURASSIC PARK????

The dinosaur "T-REX" is made completely out of type.

I came across this by random chance....still not sure how the rest will play out, but I like they way it's shaping out.
